Convection Carp
This activity shows tin foil ‘carp’ floating in water in a beaker over a Bunsen burner. As the water is gently heated, the warm water rises, taking the carp with it. At the top of the beaker, the water cools as it is exposed to the air. The water then sinks at the sides, pushed outwards by the warm water rising behind it. The fish will then sink, before starting their journey again.
