What can you do about it?

Switch off (don't standby)

If you've finished watching telly, don't be tempted to punch the standby button on your remote control. Get up and switch the box off completely! Any appliance left on standby is drawing power unnecessarily.

What's behind your fridge?

When dust begins to build on the condenser coils at the back of your fridge, it can force them to use 30% more power. A quick spring clean could make a long-lasting difference.3

Recycle rethink

Next time you open the bin, ask if the stuff you're about to dump can be reused in any way. You'll find a second life for most things, which avoids contributing to the 165 million tonnes of waste we in the UK sling out every year.3

Charger care

It's easy to leave your mobile phone on charge long after you've topped up power. The trouble is that the charger continues to use electricity, so be sure to unplug it once your mobile batter has reached fill strength.

Respect for the kettle!

If we all boiled only the water needed to make a cup of tea rather than filling up the kettle every time we'd save enough electricity to light almost every street in the country!2

Switch on to energy-efficient lightbulbs

These widely available bulbs are envronmentally friendly, cheap to run, and long lasting – so you won't have to get a ladder out to change them so often!
